Matt Campbell and his assistants have been working overtime for the last few months trying to replenish Penn State’s 2027 and 2028 recruiting classes. They are now up to 22 commitments for the Class of 2027 and have begun to add some players for the next year as well.

The Nittany Lions had been keeping a close eye on four-star quarterback Trey Tagliaferri, who they offered back in February. The school considered the New Jersey product to be one of their most important recruits, but unfortunately he likely won’t be joining the team in a couple of years.

Tagliaferri was mulling offers from some of the top schools in the nation, like Ohio State, Indiana, Georgia, and Alabama. Despite strong interest from tens of teams and his signing day being nearly two years away, Hayes Fawcett of Rivals announced on Thursday afternoon that Tagliaferri is committing to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

Notre Dame has had double-digit win seasons in the last three years thanks to a strong defense and an elite running game. The only notable weakness of the team was the quarterback position, and now they add a young man who has the potential to grow into a special one.

For Penn State, they lose out on yet another recruit and another potential answer to the everlasting quarterback dilemma. The Nittany Lions have been able to fill out a solid defensive group for the future, but the offense has been lacking outside of the wide receiver position. But we’ve seen that Campbell takes these hits in stride and usually responds with a resounding success, so let’s see what he has up his sleeve now.
