A day after reports emerged stating that Ole Miss gave head coach Lane Kiffin a deadline to decide his coaching future, Kiffin is saying that’s not true.
Kiffin, the main target of LSU and Florida’s head coaching search, went on Pat McAfee’s show and said the ultimatum is “absolutely not true.”
The Kiffin sweepstakes has intensified in recent days. Members of the Kiffin camp visited Gainesville on Sunday and Baton Rouge on Monday. Meanwhile, Ole Miss is doing its best to ink Kiffin to an extension in Oxford. Given all the noise around Kiffin, the reports of an ultimatum from Ole Miss made sense.
The Rebels are 10-1 and nearly a lock for the College Football Playoff. If Kiffin is jumping ship, there’s a lot Ole Miss has to figure out. Ole Miss AD Keith Carter would need to decide how to handle a playoff run while beginning a search for Kiffin’s replacement. Ole Miss doesn’t want to get left behind in what figures to be a historic coaching carousel.
But regardless, Lane denies that he’s been put on the clock.
Lane Kiffin, on with Pat McAfee, says the reported “ultimatum” from Ole Miss for him to make a decision is “absolutely not true.”

That doesn’t mean the report wasn’t true, or that Ole Miss isn’t frustrated with how public and drawn out this process has become. It’s always hard to separate fact from fiction in coaching searches of this magnitude.
Nobody knows what Kiffin is going to do. Perhaps not even Kiffin knows.
