The Florida football program is currently gearing up for the 2026 college football season, which is slated to get underway in early September. This year, the Gators will be led by head coach Jon Sumrall, who was hired to replace Billy Napier following his firing last season.
Recently, Sumrall made some interesting comments about the college football calendar and how it pertains to players’ school-athletics balance.
“But we still have this thing here in college football called school, all right,” Sumrall said on Next Up with Adam Brenneman, per Nick Kosko of On3 Sports. “Like, our guys, some of them are in class right now. I think the transfer portal window, when we finish the season first, when the second semester starts, is all kind of off. So, I think the counter, maybe move the start of the season up, maybe amend what the season looks like.”
Sumrall offered some potential ideas on how such a change would take effect.
“Whether that’s less regular season games, if you want to extend the playoffs, great. But to me it’s more about why can’t we end on, let’s say, January 5th or 6th, not January 26th,” he said.
Sumrall is not the only head coach who has floated the idea of moving the college football calendar up a few weeks so that the national championship game would not be so far into the month of January. The sport has already undergone extensive changes in recent years, with the conferences realigning, conference schedules changing, and with the playoff expanding to 12 teams, with some pining for even more.
Meanwhile, on the field, Sumrall will hope to lead the Gators back into college football relevance after a few down years in Gainesville.
