Every fan base in the nation wants to become college football‘s next dynasty. Whether it’s Alabama’s run in the 2010s or Nebraska’s dominance in the 1990s, every program aspires to reach those heights. Some come close, but many fall short. CBS Sports recently named the team of each decade dating back to the 1910s. Even though the 2020s aren’t over yet, one program has clearly defined the decade so far.
CBS Sports named the University of Georgia as the team of the decade. Kirby Smart has built a dynasty in Athens. Although Georgia hasn’t returned to the national championship game since winning the title in 2022, there’s little doubt the Bulldogs remain the kings of the SEC.

Smart not only knows how to recruit, but he has also thrived in the chaotic era of NIL. However, CBS highlighted what has made Georgia’s run so remarkable. It all began with a championship that had been 40 years in the making.
“Alabama defeated Georgia in the 2021 SEC Championship Game, adding to Kirby Smart’s list of frustrating defeats against his former boss. You already had the 2017 national title game and the 2018 SEC Championship Game from the previous decade, and suddenly, Bryce Young was blitzing through an all-time Dawgs defense in Atlanta to hand Georgia its first loss of the 2021 season,” Chip Patterson of CBS Sports wrote.
“But two games later, Georgia and Smart would get their ultimate revenge with a 33-18 win against Alabama in the national championship game. It was Georgia’s first national title since 1980 and now stands as a reference point for one of the great runs of the 21st Century.”

King of the SEC, college football
It may feel too early to crown Georgia as the team of the decade. In reality, however, the Bulldogs should remain the SEC favorites for years to come. Smart has built a pipeline of NFL-caliber talent that consistently shows up in the NFL Draft.
Other programs eagerly try to poach Georgia’s depth through the transfer portal. While Texas could pose a challenge in a potential College Football Playoff run, the Longhorns have yet to dethrone the kings of the SEC.
Georgia isn’t the current favorite to win the national championship in 2026. That distinction belongs to Ohio State and Texas. However, history has shown that Georgia matches up well against both programs, even when they boast elite talent.
The only question left is whether Georgia will prove Patterson and CBS Sports right by adding another national championship before the decade ends. There is every reason to believe the Bulldogs can do just that.
