Top 2027 Notre Dame linebacker target Roman Igwebuike is set to make his commitment on Saturday. Where does the Irish stand?

Notre Dame football is poised to add another dynamic defender to its 2027 recruiting class when top 150 linebacker Roman Igwebuike announces his college decision on Saturday at 4:15 PM Eastern Time.

The 6-3, 220-pound Chicago (Ill.) Mount Carmel standout will select between the Fighting Irish, Clemson, Indiana, and Tennessee, among others. Head coach Marcus Freeman and his staff have made Igwebuike a top priority, and all signs point toward Notre Dame finishing the deal with one of the Chicagoland area’s most talented defenders.

Notre Dame’s late surge pays off

The Fighting Irish had to play catch-up early in this recruitment. Several programs, including Tennessee and Clemson, established relationships with Igwebuike before Notre Dame ramped up its pursuit. Once Brian Jean-Mary took over as linebacker coach, the staff wasted no time making the Mount Carmel star a focal point of its 2027 defensive recruiting efforts.

A tremendous stretch of recent visits changed the trajectory of this recruitment. Igwebuike’s official visit a few weekends ago proved to be a significant moment, pushing Notre Dame to the top of his list. The Fighting Irish are now in a very strong spot heading into Saturday’s announcement, and there seems to be a very good chance they land the talented defender.

A physically gifted second-level defender

Igwebuike’s junior season tape speaks for itself. In 2025, he collected 115 total tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss, seven sacks, two interceptions, three forced fumbles, three pass breakups, and 17 quarterback hurries. Those numbers reflect a defender with the versatility to play multiple linebacker spots and rush the passer.

That skill set fits precisely into what Freeman has been building at Notre Dame since taking over as head coach. The Fighting Irish have prioritized length and athleticism on the second level, a transformation visible through players like Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa, Madden Faraimo, and Drayk Bowen. Igwebuike would continue that string of impressive physical talents at linebacker.

You can make a legitimate argument that even with those names already on the roster, Igwebuike could be the most physically talented linebacker of the group. He is rawer than some of those players coming out of high school, but the ceiling is enormous if he is developed properly.

Keeping Chicagoland talent at home

Keeping top talent from the Chicago area close to South Bend has been a stated priority under Freeman, though the program has missed on local targets at times over the years. Landing Igwebuike would represent a meaningful step in that effort. Along with David Folorunsho and, the staff hopes, Brayden Parks, a commitment from Igwebuike would signal that Notre Dame is winning the battle for elite players in its own backyard.

Igwebuike is a high-academic prospect from a strong football family, giving him a deeper understanding of what Notre Dame can offer beyond the field. That combination of fit and familiarity has fueled the staff’s confidence throughout this recruitment.

What it means for the 2027 class

Notre Dame’s linebacker board has shrunk considerably over the last couple of months, making Igwebuike an even higher priority. If he commits, the staff will likely need to extend the board or pursue a couple of committed players elsewhere to add a second linebacker to the class.

The 2027 cycle at the position has been somewhat up and down following the coaching change at linebacker, but Notre Dame’s overall linebacker recruiting trajectory remains strong. Landing Igwebuike on Saturday would reinforce that momentum and add a versatile, high-upside defender to a class that continues to take shape. Some of the biggest programs in college football have pursued the Chicago star for good reason, and Notre Dame appears ready to close the deal.
