Texas Tech's Five-Star Recruit Jalen Brewster Faces LSU's Strong Recruitment Challenge

The Texas Tech Red Raiders landed the initial commitment of defensive lineman Jalen Brewster. At 6-foot-3 and 300 pounds, he is a five-star recruit and the No. 1 player in the nation, according to Rivals Industry Rankings.

Joey McGuire and his staff worked hard to bring in the Cedar Hill, Texas native. He sits as the headliner in the Red Raiders’ 2027 recruiting class, which already ranks ninth in the nation and first in the Big 12.

However, they’re now working on fending off several top programs that want to flip Brewster. Rivals’ Sam Spiegelman reports that the LSU Tigers are leading a charge to get the pass rusher to Baton Rouge.

“The Tigers are also swinging away at No. 1 overall prospect Jalen Brewster, the crown jewel of Texas Tech’s historic 2027 class, who logged official visits to college football contenders around the state and country this summer,” Spiegelman wrote. “Sources close to Brewster’s recruitment believe a final decision will come before long. There is optimism in Lubbock about their chances of the five-star defensive lineman sticking. Many trusted sources also view LSU as a legitimate threat to flip the Big 12 commit.”

Despite choosing Texas Tech on Oct. 4, Brewster has continued his recruiting process. He took an official visit with LSU on May 29, and he has also done so with the Indiana Hoosiers (April 25), SMU Mustangs (May 1), Texas Longhorns (June 5) and Florida Gators (June 11).

If the Tigers are serious about orchestrating a flip, though, they must be ready to hand out some serious cash. On3’s Pete Nakos reported that Brewster is expected to make $1 million in his first year with the Red Raiders.

Under new head coach Lane Kiffin, LSU has shown a willingness to make major NIL commitments to top players. With their eyes on Brewster, the Tigers remain one of the most significant threats to flip the nation’s top prospect from Texas Tech.
