If you are an Ohio State football fan — and if you are here we assume you are — then you more than likely know that OSU superstar wide receiver Jeremiah Smith is poised to break the three major Buckeye receiving records at some point in 2026, and not terribly late in the year either. As it stands, at the end of last year, Smith has 156 receptions, 2,401 receiving yards, and 26 touchdowns for Ohio State.
None of those hit the all-time mark, but he's approaching all three quickly. In fact, the career receptions and yardage marks are currently held by his former teammate, Emeka Egbuka with 205 catches and 2,868 receiving yards. The career touchdown leader to don the Scarlet and Gray is Chris Olave with 35 catches in pay dirt. That's all recent history, but they are all about to be in the recent past.
That's because Smith is almost assuredly going to surpass those, and we thought it would be a fun exercise to try and handicap when that would happen based on his career numbers. To do that, let's look at his averages over the last couple of years. Through his freshman and sophomore years, Smith is averaging 5.62 catches per game, 134.63 yards per contest, and .93 touchdowns each time he runs out on the field.
All of that being equal, and not taking into account blowouts where he's taken off the field, injury concerns, or game plans that are more heavily reliant on a running game, we can extrapolate when Smith might become the holder for all of these major OSU career receiving records. We also won't go too far with expecting a significant leap in production, though that too could occur.
Here's when we can realistically expect all three major Ohio State receiving records to fall in 2026 for one Jeremiah Jovan Smith.
Ohio State Receptions Record
Smith – 156 receptions
Record (205 – Egbuka) | 49 to tie, 50 to be sole leader
Projected record holder | ninth game of the year – vs. Oregon at home (Nov. 7)
Ohio State Receiving Yards Record
Smith – 2,401 receiving yards
Record (2,868 yards – Egbuka) | 467 yards to tie, 468 to be sole leader
Projected record holder | fourth game of the year – vs. Illinois at home (Sept. 26)
Ohio State Receiving Touchdowns Record
Smith – 26 touchdowns
Record (35 TDs – Olave) | 9 TDs to tie, 10 to be sole leader
Projected record holder | tenth game of the year – vs. Northwestern at home (Nov. 14)
Just looking at all of this, each record is projected to occur at home, and that would be great for Smith and Ohio State fans. Also, the Oregon game could be huge with both the career touchdown and receptions record falling. The rate for the career leader in touchdowns is barely off for hitting against the Ducks, but it could very easily happen.
None of this, of course, is set in stone, but it's a good starting point to be on the watch for these records to fall and for Smith to go down as the best receiver to ever run through the tunnel at Ohio State. Set the clock.
