Ohio State has built another strong recruiting class for 2027 to this point. However, the hopes of them landing another five-star wideout in the class just took a hit.
The Ohio State Buckeyes have had a big last couple of weeks on the recruiting trail. Ohio State is pushing for another top-5 class, and they’ll lock one in if they can land five-star RB David Gabriel Georges.
Landing five-star DL Marcus Fakatou was a big deal for the Buckeyes last week, and they could land another elite defensive line recruit on July 18 when Karlos May decides.
The Buckeyes are in the mix to add another five-star wide receiver in the class to pair with Jamier Brown, but it’s starting to look like that won’t happen.
Five-star WR Monshun Sales’ latest update isn’t promising for the Buckeyes
Ohio State has been in the mix for top wideout recruit Monshun Sales for quite some time along with Alabama and Indiana. The Texas Longhorns have gained traction as of late, and it appears Sales will pick the field over Ohio State.
“As of right now I don’t think five-star receiver Monshun Sales ends up with Ohio State but the Buckeyes are a finalist alongside Indiana, Texas, Alabama, and LSU,” Rivals’ Steve Wiltfong wrote recently.
Ohio State got an official visit from Sales on June 12 and it was a key one to get the Indiana native in town. Cortez Hankton has been leading the recruitment since he’s been on the job after taking over for Brian Hartline.
According to 247 Sports, Sales is the No. 1 wideout and No. 13 overall player in the class of 2027.
Losing out on Monshun Sales is a loss the Buckeyes can stomach
In an era where each player you bring in has a price point, getting multiple five-star wideouts in a class feels like a thing of the past. Ohio State did a great job in the class of 2026 by landing Chris Henry Jr. Jerquaden Guilford, and Brock Boyd. If all goes according to plan for the Buckeyes, each of those players will be contributors by 2027, and all will be a lot more costly.
Ohio State landed a commitment from three-star WR Jordan Donahoo recently, who offers size like Sales at 6-foot-4, and he’s a player who can win downfield. With what Ohio State’s depth looks like right now, they can develop Donahoo and hope he’s something by his third year in Columbus.
Now, the best outcome for the Buckeyes if they don’t get Sales is that he ends up at Alabama or Texas. Sales staying in state with the Hoosiers would be a player the Buckeyes have to deal with in the Big Ten the next few years. With it looking like the Buckeyes won’t land Sales, Ohio State fans should be hoping he heads south.
