Florida’s Hot Recruiting Stretch Is Carrying Over to the 2028 Class

As the Florida Gators and head coach Jon Sumrall continue to build the program’s 2027 recruiting class, it’s clear that the newest head coach is already making a difference this offseason.

Since arriving to Gainesville back in December of 2025, the former Tulane Green Waves’ head coach has landed a total of 26 commits in the 2027 cycle, with five-star offensive lineman Maxwell Hiller and four-star quarterback Davin Davidson leading the group. Still, while the Gators’ coaching staff has made noise in the upcoming class, their efforts are slowly becoming prevalent in the 2028 class.

One name to keep an eye on heading into the 2028 recruiting class is five-star defensive lineman Tyzon Swann, as the Gators are beginning to emerge as one of the top teams in the mix for the rising star.

Could the Gators Land Swann?

Swann, as one of the top defenders in the 2028 recruiting cycle, has already caught the attention of many Power Four programs heading into his junior season. Currently, the prolific recruit is the No. 1 defensive lineman and the No. 1 prospect in the state of Maryland, as well as the No. 5 prospect in the 2028 cycle, according to 247Sports’ Composite.

During his sophomore season at Henry E. Lackey High School, Swann completely dominated the competition, finishing the year with 135 tackles, 50 tackles for loss, 16 sacks, and eight forced fumbles. His incredible efforts throughout the 2025 season quickly landed him an offer from Sumrall shortly after his arrival in Gainesville, and he also received an invitation to the 2027 adidas Polynesian Bowl.

However, in order for the Gators to secure Swann for the 2028 recruiting class, the struggling program must compete against the Ohio State Buckeyes, the Auburn Tigers, and his in-state program, the Maryland Terrapins. Swann took an unofficial visit to Maryland earlier this offseason, but with Florida making an early run for the highly-touted prospect, there’s a good chance Swann could make an official visit to Gainesville in the foreseeable future.

Outside of the pursuit for Swann, Sumrall has managed to land his first commitment for the 2028 recruiting class last month in four-star wide receiver Armani Strong. The Hollywood, FL native is a top-30 prospect in the state of Florida, and a potential combination of Strong and Swann could become a terrific starting point for the Gators’ future class.
