Cincinnati faces NCAA inquiry connected to Brendan Sorsby gambling investigation

Just when the college football world thought the Brendan Sorsby fallout was over, it appears it may not be. The Big 12 already had an unresolved complaint involving Texas Tech, and now the NCAA has potentially opened another investigation involving Sorsby. This time at the last school where he played meaningful snaps.

Yahoo Sports reports that the NCAA has sent a letter of inquiry to the University of Cincinnati regarding Sorsby. To be clear, the letter does not currently indicate any wrongdoing by the Cincinnati Bearcats.

“The NCAA has sent a letter of inquiry to the University of Cincinnati related to Sorsby’s time at the school, those with knowledge tell Yahoo Sports. An inquiry letter is not uncommon and doesn’t necessarily signal wrongdoing, but it is often the start of an investigative process over possible rules violations, one that often is a collaborative effort with the school itself. Sorsby played the last two seasons at Cincinnati during which he has acknowledged betting on sports. School officials expect to soon respond to the inquiry, presumably with documentation and details that the NCAA requested.” Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports reported.

Sorsby saga not over yet

It remains unclear what prompted the inquiry or what specific issues the NCAA is examining. However, based on Sorsby’s previous testimony in his court case, he placed sports bets while attending Cincinnati.

One possibility is that the NCAA is investigating whether the university exercised appropriate due diligence regarding Sorsby’s betting activity. It is also possible the NCAA is seeking to determine whether Cincinnati knew about, or had been alerted to, his gambling while he was a member of the football team.

Cincinnati has also filed a lawsuit against Sorsby seeking $1 million over his transfer to Texas Tech. The claim alleges he breached his NIL contract with the university.

Sorsby played for Cincinnati from 2024 to 2025, emerging as one of college football’s most dynamic quarterbacks. After throwing 27 touchdown passes and rushing for nine more touchdowns in his final season, he transferred to Texas Tech.

That transfer marked the beginning of the Sorsby saga surrounding his gambling and subsequent NCAA ban.

The Sorsby saga has now involved three universities, multiple court circuits, and much of the college football world. Additional developments could emerge from this inquiry or other aspects of the ongoing fallout.

For now, Sorsby is training in Texas as he prepares for the 2027 NFL Draft. He was previously denied the opportunity to enter the NFL through the Supplemental Draft after the league elected not to hold one.
