The biggest moment in Longhorns recruiting during the 2027 cycle has been the commitment of five-star John Meredith III. The cornerback is the nation’s No. 2 2027 recruit. He says he would like the Longhorns to play Texas Tech “so people can know what’s the real difference between them.”

Meredith announced his commitment decision on ESPN’s Pat McAfee Show in late June. Meredith picked Texas over rival Texas A&M and Ohio State. 6-foot-2, 175-pound DB was named the biggest pledge during a wild recruiting month and he’s the highest ranked commit in the SEC.

The five-star is the highest ranked defensive back commitment in Texas football recruiting history, a school that has three former Thorpe Award winners as the country’s best DB.

Meredith is already acting like a Longhorns leader with his comments around Texas Tech. The Red Raiders have been very vocal about their desire to once again play UT. Even resorting to calling Texas “scared.” But Meredith has an answer to the banter.

“I would like Texas to play Texas Tech so people can know what’s the real difference between them.” – Texas commit John Meredith III

The Longhorns are 55-18 against Tech, in what has always been a one-sided rivalry. Meredith wouldn’t mind it if Texas continued the tradition of beating the Red Raiders regularly.
