The 2027 Big Ten Recruiting Rankings Tell a Very Interesting Story

Each team's 2027 recruiting class is coming together. For some, they need signing day to be tomorrow, as they are beginning to hemorrhage and lose guys late in the process. For others, the last big pieces are falling into place, rounding out the recruiting class.

Thankfully, the Ohio State Buckeyes fall into the latter category as they are getting some stragglers to commit as the season inches closer.

However, the story here is not about the Buckeyes specifically; it is about the Big Ten at large.

Although the way to build a competitive team through high school recruiting is quickly becoming a thing of the past, recruiting rankings are still a signal of the future of a program and, more importantly, the ability of the head coach on the recruiting trail.

A couple of things stand out as we look forward to the 2027 class. The Buckeyes are sitting pretty as the No. 2 class in the conference, pinned behind Dan Lanning's Oregon Ducks. Change the record.

The trickle-down from Ohio State at No. 2 is where it gets interesting. The Nebraska Cornhuskers have catapulted themselves to the top of the conference with an impressive class of players, as they have even picked off a couple of decommits.

The USC Trojans check in at No. 4, and that feels like a place that they should consistently be, but they simply haven't been for years. It is about time that Lincoln Riley started to turn that ship around in Southern California.

The biggest surprise in this list is the UCLA Bruins checking in all the way up at No. 5 under brand-new head coach Bob Chesney. This is truly where they should always be, but have not been for years. A resurgence of the Bruins program would be incredible for college football.

Michigan slots in at No. 6 while the Penn State Nittany Lions have fallen from a top-3 class to the 7th-ranked class in the Big Ten after a couple of key decommits.

All of that traffic at the top is good to see some new logos jockeying for position. The biggest surprise of the 2027 class is the Indiana Hoosiers, who have the No. 14 ranked class in the Big Ten, which translates to the No. 38 class nationally, which is up from being the No. 45 class just last week.

Curt Cignetti has either committed to building transfer portal teams or is having a tough time on the high school trail.

The 2027 class is obviously not complete, but the way it is shaping up is pointing to some changes at the top of the conference in the years to come.
