Loyalty is a difficult thing to find in college football these days in the age of NIL deals and the expanded transfer portal. Players frequently jump ship for opportunities to earn more money, join a team that increases their exposure, or just for an easier path to playing meaningful snaps.
Penn State has experienced a few heartbreaks over the last month, with three players flipping their commitments after the school had carefully rebuilt its 2027 recruiting class. You can never be certain about how long you’ll have a player these days, but newest quarterback commit James Armstrong wants the Nittany Lions and their fans to know that he plans on being here for the long haul.
He told reporters that, “I am a man of my word. I want to go to Penn State and the thought of decommitting and everything else is not in my head.”
The four-star quarterback committed to the team last week after a months long pursuit that ended up with him choosing the Nittany Lions over a few other strong contenders. We see players commit to teams all the time, keep their recruitment open, and leave if they receive more money elsewhere or get cold feet.
Armstrong hasn’t necessarily shut down his recruitment, but his pledge is a welcome change from the swarm of players who leave the door open for a potential exit. It doesn’t sound like Armstrong is the type to bring that kind of drama, so let’s see if he sticks to his word.
