Several Freshman Could Make Their Presence Felt On Notre Dame's Defense In 2026

Notre Dame just brought in the No. 1 ranked recruiting class in the 2026 cycle according to On3/Rivals and after seeing most of the players throughout spring training, the ranking was justified. This is an exceptionally talented group of players that will be extremely difficult to keep off of the field, especially on defense. Earlier this week, we broke down the offensive freshman that could make an impact on the field this season. There's two players that have the opportunity to play on offense, but it's not a given.
The same cannot be said for the defensive side of the ball. Defensive coordinator Chris Ash and his new-look coaching staff have a lot of young talent at their disposal heading into this season. There's two position groups I'm confident in that we'll see members of the 2026 class make an impact with. The defensive line and secondary hold a good chunk of the overall talent from the 2026 recruiting class, and those players will be very difficult to keep off of the field.
THE DEFENSIVE LINE
One of the most impressive true freshman throughout the spring was defensive end Rodney Dunham from North Carolina. He received a 4.5 star grade with a 5.0 star upside ranking on the Irish Breakdown recruiting board, and he's been living up to that ranking so far. The depth at defensive end for the Irish is up for debate. There's several talented candidates who could insert themselves in the rotation behind Boubacar Traore and Bryce Young. Dunham is one of those talented players but he isn't alone.
Fellow true freshman Ebenezer Ewetade also had a really promising spring. He's a little further away from playing meaningful minutes than what Dunham is, but with a strong fall camp, the North Carolina native could also see significant snaps this fall. Defensive tackles Elijah Golden and Tiki Hola have a little bit more in front of them before they enter the rotation, especially Hola who missed the spring with an injury. But Golden's talent and potential flashed throughout the spring.
THE SECONDARY
Safety Joey O'Brien was one of the most talked about players in the 2026 recruiting cycle. He's a player at the top of most people's lists when talking about freshman who will play significant snaps in 2026. The 6-5, 200-pound safety starting surging up the depth chart throughout spring training, but a lower body injury sidelined him for the rest of spring. His status for fall camp remains unclear, but when he's back to health, O'Brien will be nearly impossible to keep off of the field.
We also saw a lot from the true freshman cornerbacks this spring. Ayden Pouncey and Chaz Smith flashed throughout the spring, but still have a ways to go before they're game ready. Pouncey's length and physicality was on full display this spring. He'll just have to get a little bigger. Smith is a player who's time will come in the near future, but he needs a little bit more seasoning before he's ready to be inserted into games. Having said that, a strong fall camp could vault him into this conversation as well.
True freshman cornerback Khary Adams is the wild card. He was the highest graded cornerback on the IB boards with a 4.5 star ranking with 5.0 star upside. The 6-1, 187-pound Maryland native missed the spring with an injury, but hopes to make his presence felt in fall camp. If he gets adjusted to competing at the collegiate level, he could also be in the mix.
The true freshman linebackers have a lot in front of them on the depth chart and have a lot of growing to do before they're game-ready. Thomas Davis Jr. flashed throughout the spring but you could see how raw he still was. Fellow true freshman linebacker Jakobe Clapper missed spring with a shoulder injury, but I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do throughout fall camp.
