Fresh off a run to the national title game, this year’s Miami Hurricanes might even be better. The offense has a pair of 1,000-yard receivers (Cooper Barkate and Malachi Toney), a 1,000-yard rusher (Mark Fletcher) and one of the ACC’s top returning QBs (Darian Mensah). The defense added a massive pass-rush threat in Missouri transfer Damon Wilson II and returns six starters. Head coach Mario Cristobal’s roster-building has positioned Miami as an ACC favorite and legitimate national title threat.

Previewing Miami’s Offense for 2026
Miami has explosive pieces on offense, led by former Duke standout quarterback Darian Mensah, who threw for 34 touchdowns and only six interceptions in leading the Blue Devils to the ACC title in 2025. The Hurricanes also picked up his favorite target at Duke — Cooper Barkate (1,106 yards, seven TDs last season). Now add in the return of one of the nation’s most explosive slot threats in Malachi Toney (1,211 yards, 10 TDs), as well as running back Mark Fletcher Jr. (1,192 yards, 12 TDs), and the Canes have no shortage of weapons.
The big question is an offensive line that loses four starters and is relying on oft-injured center Ryan Rodriguez, true freshman tackle Jackson Cantwell and former 5-star recruit Samson Okunlola. The lone returner up front is Matthew McCoy, who could play guard or tackle.

Previewing Miami’s Defense for 2026
Despite some key losses — including star ends Rueben Bain Jr. and Akheem Mesidor — this should once again be a playmaking group. Miami added fearsome Missouri pass rusher Damon Wilson II (nine sacks in 2025), and the team returns Marquise Lightfoot (2.5 sacks), DE/DT Armondo Blount (2.5 sacks), starting tackles Ahmad Moten Sr. (4.5 sacks) and Justin Scott (6.5 tackles for a loss).
The top four cornerbacks return, led by Romanas “OJ” Frederique Jr. (seven pass breakups) and Xavier Lucas (45 tackles, INT). Starting safety Zechariah Poyser (68 tackles) is joined by nickel/S Bryce Fitzgerald (six INTs) and Boston College transfer Omar Thornton (82 tackles).
An area of concern depth-wise is at linebacker. Mohamed Toure (84 tackles) is back, but the position has question marks, as guys like Chase Smith and former NC State transfer Kamal Bonner need to step up.
Previewing Miami’s Specialists for 2026
Northwestern transfer Jack Olsen (19-of-21 on field goals, with a long of 41 yards) will handle field goals with Florida State transfer Jake Weinberg handling kickoffs. Punter Dylan Joyce is one of the ACC’s best, averaging 44.4 yards per punt last season. The return game should be explosive behind the speedy Toney (13.0 yards per punt return).
