Last week, SEC Unfiltered released its best, and worst case scenario records for Texas A&M during the 2026 season, predicting that a 10-2 record would be the absolute best finish for the Aggies this fall, while a 7-5 finish would serve as the worst outcome, likely due to injuries or the newly formed offensive line, now featuring four new starters, struggling to find a rhythm.
No one knows how the Aggies’ 2026 season will transpire after a record 10 players were selected in the 2026 NFL Draft, combined with 17 transfer portal additions, with more than half coming on defense, needing to make an immediate impact this fall.
Returning for his second full starting season, quarterback Marcel Reed’s 3,169 yards and 25 touchdowns proved that he can lead the Aggie offense, but his 12 interceptions, tied for the second most in the SEC, were highly problematic, while his four turnovers against Texas at the end of the regular season, and Miami in the first round of the College Football Playoff, must be avoided if the Aggies have any shot at making it back to the postseason.
Reed has gained healthy weight this offseason after working out at the D1 Training facility, and is working with his private QB coach Jeff Christensen in an effort to improve his remaining mechanics, starting with his accuracy and decision-making, while eliminating mental mistakes down the stretch of games is the primary focus.
Last season, despite his career year through the air, Reed did not show up when it mattered most against Texas and Miami, finishing with poor numbers aside from his turnovers, including zero touchdowns and fewer than 250 passing yards in both games.
- 2025 A&M vs Texas loss 27-17: 20-32, 180 yards, zero touchdowns, two interceptions, 71 rushing yards
- 2025 A&M vs Miami (FL) loss 10-3: 25-39, 237 yards, zero touchdowns, two interceptions, 27 rushing yards
SEC Unfiltered host Chris Phillips feels, like all of us, that Marcel Reed not taking the “next step” in his development will sink the Aggies’ chances of making it back to the CFP. Texas A&M’s wide receiver room now includes Alabama transfer Isaiah Horton, who joins a loaded rotation led by star junior Mario Craver.
Third-year coach Mike Elko took a gamble this offseason after elevating WR coach Holmon Wiggins as the team’s new offensive coordinator and playcaller, feeling that his background as a former Alabama coach Nick Saban assistant head coach, while serving as former OC Collin Klein’s co-offensive coordinator for the last two seasons, is more than enough to call plays.
