The Michigan Wolverines just extended an offer to one of the most coveted young defenders in the country. Just a couple days ago on July 9th, Michigan officially entered the race for elite class of 2028 linebacker Ryan Peterson. The 6-foot-1, 220-pound standout from Cornelius (NC) Hough High School already boasts a collection of more than 30 scholarship offers, but his latest from the Wolverines stands out as uniquely personal.

For Peterson, an offer from the reigning traditional powerhouse isn't just another notch on his recruiting belt—it is a childhood dream starting to materialize.

"Michigan has always been a special place to me since I was a kid and I still see it the same way today," Peterson told The Michigan Insider. "They've brought in a great new coaching staff, and I really believe they're building something special up there. I'm excited to get back on campus and continue building those relationships."

Instantly Clicking with Coach Alex Whittingham

The offer was delivered by Michigan linebackers coach Alex Whittingham, who has wasted no time identifying premier talent to anchor the second level of the Wolverines' future defense. Though the recruiting cycle for the class of 2028 is in its early chapters, the initial connection between the rising high school junior and Whittingham left a strong impression.

"Obviously our relationship is just getting started, but Coach Whittingham and I had a really good conversation," Peterson noted. "I came away from it with a great feeling. He gave off really positive vibes, and you can tell how genuine he is. I'm looking forward to continuing to build our relationship and learning more about the program."

Growing up, Peterson found inspiration in Michigan's defensive tradition, specifically looking up to former Heisman finalist and versatile defender Jabrill Peppers. "I always loved watching them, and I was a huge Jabrill Peppers fan because I wanted to play the game the way he did," Peterson added. "Earning an offer from a program I looked up to as a kid makes the opportunity even more meaningful, and it's something I'll always be grateful for."

A Blue-Chip Profile

Peterson's recruit profile reflects exactly why blue-blood programs are aggressively competing for his commitment. According to the 247Sports Composite, Peterson is highly regarded as one of the elite defensive anchors in his class:

On the field, Peterson's sophomore campaign at Hough High School was spectacular. He showcased the exact sideline-to-sideline range, downhill physicality, and pass-coverage versatility that modern college defenses prioritize. His exceptional instincts and toughness helped lead the Huskies to an outstanding playoff run, establishing him as a true tone-setter in North Carolina high school football.

The Recruiting Landscape

Michigan's offer drops right into a intensely competitive summer timeline for Peterson. The Wolverines join a heavily contested recruiting battle that features elite Power Four programs across the nation.

  • May 18, 2026: Received an offer from the Indiana Hoosiers.
  • May 30, 2026: Took an unofficial visit to checkout the Tennessee Volunteers.
  • June 15, 2026: Secured a scholarship offer from the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
  • June 21, 2026: Attended the Florida State Seminoles showcase camp.
  • July 9, 2026: Formally offered by the Michigan Wolverines.

In addition to these programs, Peterson holds offers from regional and national heavyweights like Alabama, Georgia, Auburn, Florida, LSU, and Miami.

With the scholarship offer securely in hand, Peterson is already looking at scheduling a trip north to experience the Big House firsthand. "Yes, I definitely plan on getting to a game this year," Peterson confirmed. As Coach Alex Whittingham and the new-look Michigan staff continue to construct their defensive pipeline, landing a player with Peterson's talent—and lifelong appreciation for the block 'M'—could provide a cornerstone addition for the Wolverines' 2028 haul.
