Kansas Football's $448 Million Stadium Renovation Remains Among Nation's Largest 

Kansas has transformed David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium from one of college football's oldest venues into one of the sport's most ambitious renovation projects.

Even after Florida recently unveiled plans for a staggering $1.45 billion overhaul of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, Kansas still ranks among the nation's leaders in stadium investment. According to a recent comparison shared by The Next Round, the Jayhawks' approximately $448 million Gateway District project ranks as the third-most expensive stadium renovation in college football.

Only Florida and Northwestern have committed more money to stadium renovations.

The investment reflects Kansas' commitment to elevating every aspect of its football program under athletic director Travis Goff and head coach Lance Leipold.

After spending the 2024 season playing home games at Children's Mercy Park and GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium while construction continued, the Jayhawks returned to a dramatically transformed David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium last fall.

The new venue features upgraded premium seating, modernized fan amenities, expanded concourses and a redesigned west side of the stadium. One of the project's signature additions is the exterior lighting that resembles wheat stalks, paying tribute to Kansas' iconic "Wave the Wheat" tradition. Construction, however, is not complete.

Additional phases of the Gateway District project remain underway, with the full development expected to be finished by 2027 or 2028. Those future phases include expanded entertainment, hospitality and mixed-use spaces surrounding the stadium, creating a year-round destination beyond football Saturdays.

While Kansas has endured back-to-back 5-7 seasons entering 2026, the investment has already begun paying dividends off the field.

Modern facilities have become a valuable recruiting tool for Leipold's staff, giving Kansas infrastructure that now compares favorably with many Power Four programs. Just a decade ago, David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium was widely viewed as one of the most outdated venues in major college football.

Today, it stands as one of the country's largest facility investments.

The expectation inside the program is that the upgraded stadium, combined with continued investment throughout the athletic department, will help position Kansas to compete for recruits, fan support and sustained success well into the future.
