The Georgia Bulldogs are going to try this season to get back to the mountaintop of college football and win their first national title since going back-to-back in 2021 and 2022.

In order to do that though, they will have to navigate through the SEC and get to the College Football Playoff against a schedule which is always going to be difficult. It's not the roughest slate of opponents the Dawgs have ever had, but there are some unique challenges on the schedule.

The first big one starts in week four against the Oklahoma Sooners, a team who made the CFP last year.

Oklahoma Has to Come to Sanford Stadium

Barring a surprising upset at Arkansas the week prior, this should be the first real test on the schedule for Georgia and one to where it is very much a game they could drop if they are not on top of things.

He was ineffective after returning from injury last year, but John Mateer was one of the best quarterbacks in the country early in the 2025 season and has the potential to hurt opposing defenses.

The Sooners also have one of the best defenses in the country under Brent Venables and a fearsome pass rush could wreak some absolute havoc on Gunner Stockton if the offense is experiencing some growing pains early in the season.

It being in Athens of course gives the Dawgs a real advantage, but this opponent is not anything close to what could be considered a pushover.

Is There a Real Path to Victory for Oklahoma?

A lot can change between now and a month into the season, but the Sooners should absolutely be viewed as an opponent capable of beating Georgia. This is a team that went into Tuscaloosa last season and handled Alabama, so going on the road against a major opponent is not anything they cannot handle.

Ultimately, if the Dawgs pass rush can rattle Mateer and force him into some of the kind of mistakes he made last year late and create an early turnover or two, they will have a chance to make this a sweat free night in Sanford.

However, if it's the Oklahoma defense who's setting the pace and imposing its will on the Bulldog offense early, this could have the makings of a game Georgia has to simply survive in and do enough to win.

Regardless, the crowd should be in for a tremendous Saturday in Athens when the Sooners come to town on September 26.
