Tennessee Football Projected to Start True Freshman QB Faizon brandon

The Tennessee Volunteers will have a new quarterback to open the 2026 college football season. With Joey Aguilar out of the picture, a competition between redshirt freshman George MacIntyre and true freshman Faizon Brandon has become a focal point in the Volunteers’ offseason.

Tennessee now has less than two months to decide the starter for their season opener against the Furman Paladins on Sept. 5. Although the battle is far from over, one analyst believes the program will be going with the true freshman.

In an article published by On3 on Tuesday, Pete Nakos projected that Brandon will be the Volunteers’ starting quarterback.

“Entering the spring, it appeared George MacIntyre was the clear quarterback to beat to earn the starting job,” Nakos wrote. “But true freshman Faizon Brandon came on strong, pushing MacIntyre and looking better at times. Sources through the spring and now into the summer continue to tell On3 that Brandon has positioned himself to truly compete for the job and potentially start Week 1. MacIntyre had an up-and-down spring and clearly did not outright win the job. The amount of talent and potential Brandon has will be hard to tamp down.”

While leaning on a true freshman always poses its risks, Brandon is an extremely talented option. As a member of the 2026 recruiting class, he is a five-star recruit, the No. 3 quarterback and the No. 9 player in the nation, according to Rivals Industry Rankings.

He is also an extremely versatile signal-caller. In four seasons at the varsity level for Grimsley High School, he passed for 7,490 yards and 90 touchdowns, while also rushing for 1,494 yards and 24 touchdowns.

After a team scrimmage on April 2, head coach Josh Heupel shared some insight on his development, saying, “As a true freshman, certainly pleased with what he’s done up until this point,” per 247Sports’ Patrick Brown.

While MacIntyre was viewed as the more likely option early on, it’s clear that Brandon is giving Tennessee something to think about. Whether or not he secures the starting role, his development has turned this quarterback battle into an intriguing storyline for the Volunteers.
