The Washington Huskies will be incorporating a fair amount of youth along their defensive line during the 2026 season, and freshman TI Umu-Cais will literally be in the middle of it all.

After enrolling early, the 6-foot-2, 312-pound former four-star recruit out of Cherry Creek High School in Colorado—who was one of Jedd Fisch's coaching staff's biggest wins on the recruiting trail in the 2026 cycle after the Huskies beat out Oklahoma, North Carolina, and more for his services—didn't take long to adjust to the college game.

While mainly running with the second-team defense, Umu-Cais took the majority of his reps at nose tackle in the middle of defensive coordinator Ryan Walters' five-man front. Even though he wasn't necessarily the largest disruptor as a pass rusher, he quickly got his feet under him as a run defender, and as he continues to adjust to the next level, Washington's coaching staff was very pleased with his skill set during his first camp.

"He's strong, and he's powerful, and so you can see when he lays his hands on somebody, he'll get the knockback," defensive line coach Jason Kaufusi said in April.

"The thing he has to work on is keep moving his feet. I think, in high school, whether it was him or (Derek Colman-Brusa), just because they were so much bigger than a lot of the kids in high school.
They were able to get away with just being big and strong. Now the speed is a little bit different…Strike, but now you gotta keep moving your feet and be really good with your eyes."

With veterans around him along the interior like Elinneus Davis, who is expected to step into a starring role this fall, and transfer portal additions DeSean Watts, Darin Conley, and Kai McClendon, who missed spring practice while recovering from a torn ACL, Umu-Cais could provide an immediate impact in the middle after the Huskies saw ten players on the defensive line graduate or transfer after the 2025 season.
