Clemson Quarterback Suffered Hamstring Injury During Summer Break

The Clemson Tigers are set to enter training camp with a quarterback battle this spring.

The Tigers will have a tough decision to make between Christopher Vizzina, who was the backup for Cade Klubnik last season and freshman Tait Reynolds, who could give Clemson some much-needed mobility behind an offensive line that will have question marks heading into the fall.

The third choice is Chris Denson, who took a redshirt during his freshman season with the Tigers in 2025.

On Tuesday, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney told reporters that he tweaked his hamstring during the summer break. Denson has been working at other positions at offense besides quarterback.

"He has been working receiver, some running back, he actually tweaked his hamstring the other day," Swinney said of Denson, via Cole Bryson. "He is open to figuring it out, we just haven't been on the field with him."

It's unclear how serious the hamstring injury is for Denson.

Clemson offensive coordinator Chad Morris gave more details on Denson's transition into his new offense. The Tigers want to find a way to get the ball in his hands, and plan to use him in a "hybrid" role this season.

Via Chapel Fowler of The State Newspaper:

"Clemson offensive coordinator Chad Morris reveals that QB Chris Denson, a talented rusher/athlete, is still taking some QB reps but has shifted into more of a 'hybrid' role and will also play WR/RB for the offense in 2026. Morris on Denson: 'We’re trying to find a spot for him.'”

With Reynolds on campus, Denson wouldn't appear to have much of a chance winning the starting quarterback job at Clemson, especially with Vizzina on the roster.

Per 247 Sports, Denson, a three-star athlete, was the 59th-best quarterback in the 2025 class.

Still, the Clemson coaching staff believes Denson has something to offer the team. He could earn some touches at a skilled position, and Morris could feature his arm talent with some trick plays.

Expect Morris to have a little more fun with the offense this season. The Tigers will need to think outside of the box to move the ball with questions at a few key positions.
