Jeremiyah Love's Heisman Push Gets Promise From Todd McShay

Key Points:

  • Jeremiyah Love is a possible Heisman finalist
  • Todd McShay is backing the ND runner
  • McShay made a promise about Love

Coach Marcus Freeman and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish are back in the hunt for the College Football Playoff, currently ranked number nine in the AP Top 25 Poll with Syracuse next up in South Bend this Saturday.

The Fighting Irish have been led by many of the usual suspects from last year’s team including star running back Jeremiyah Love, who has racked up 1,135 yards and 14 touchdowns thus far, his second consecutive 1,000-plus yard season.

On Tuesday, ESPN reporter Todd McShay had a message for the college football world on Love’s Heisman candidacy with Notre Dame approaching the stretch run in search of another Playoff berth.

Love’s Heisman Candidacy

Love is a strong Heisman candidate heading down the stretch of the season who lacks a defining moment and the high volume of carries typically needed for a running back to be invited to New York for the big ceremony.

“Elite player, wrong award,” ESPN’s Pamela Maldonado wrote on Tuesday of Love’s candidacy.

Love is listed with +4000 odds to win the award by ESPN BET Sportsbook behind only three other players: Fernando Mendoza of Indiana, Julian Sayin of Ohio State and Marcel Reed of Texas A&M.

Love deserves more respect than he’s been getting according to ESPN personality, researcher and football reporter Todd McShay.

McShay Makes Pledge on Love’s Heisman Candidacy

McShay made a pledge on Love’s candidacy for a trip to the ceremony at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Appel Room in New York City on Saturday, Dec. 13.

“I’m the first to admit, I knew he was the best back in the country coming into this year,” McShay said.

“Everyone did. But I didn’t know he was going to be like that (Ashton) Jeanty, Bijan (Robinson) level,” he added.

“He is so smooth…But it’s more than that. It’s how smooth he is with his feet…If he doesn’t get to New York, what the hell are we doing? And I have a Heisman vote, so I’ll do my part,” McShay added, comparing him to the Raiders star rookie Jeanty.
