Ahead of the third CFP rankings reveal, Texas A&M remains the No. 3-ranked team in both the US LBM Coaches Poll and the AP Top 25, as the Aggies are coming off one of the craziest comebacks in both program and SEC history, all due to the effort shown from head coach Mike Elko’s talented veteran team in the second half.
Starting quarterback Marcel Reed had a career day in the pocket after the redshirt sophomore threw for 439 yards, including 298 yards and three touchdowns in the second half. At the same time, the Aggie defense erupted for four sacks and ten tackles for loss, looking every bit like one of the best teams in the country, looking to make its first appearance in the College Football Playoff.
Trailing 30-3 at the half, many of us believe that Mike Elko likely gave one of the more memorable halftime speeches that spurred his team to its historic comeback. However, on Monday, after stating during the post-game presser that he really didn’t remember what he said, the second-year head coach noted that his job is always to be the “opposite of the moment” when the chips are down.
Still, Elko noted that all the work put in during the early months of the offseason prepared the Aggies for this moment, praising his team’s mentality and ability to overcome the impossible, focusing on playing with a physical edge.
“You’re dealing with 18-21-year-olds. They’re not, by nature, the most consistent group on the planet. That’s not just Texas A&M football players. That’s 18-21-year-olds everywhere.” “Our process is we’re a blue-collar group. We’re a physical group… If we ever walk away from that blueprint, it’s going to be really hard for us to have success. That’s just who we are at our core.”
This “blueprint” was established back in January when nearly every one of the team’s transfer additions, headlined by wide receivers KC Concepcion and Mario Craver, entered the program, and have bought into the process that has led to Texas A&M’s 10-0 record.
“My job is to always be opposite the moment.”
