The Oregon Ducks and head coach Dan Lanning may have landed a future starting quarterback during the 2026 college football offseason.
Dylan Raiola, who became a popular name in the college football world over the last couple of years with the Nebraska Cornhuskers, ended up committing to play at Oregon. While he won't be starting this year and will be the backup behind Dante Moore, there is belief that he could take over as the Ducks' starter in 2027.
Known mostly for his similar appearance to superstar NFL quarterback Patrick Mahomes, Raiola entered college football with big-time hype. He has shown flashes of star potential, but was never able to find consistency at Nebraska.
Through his first two college seasons, Raiola has thrown for 4,819 yards, 31 touchdowns, and 17 interceptions, while completing 69.1 percent of his pass attempts.
While the move could have landed Oregon a future starter under center, ESPN did not rank the transfer portal addition very high.
ESPN analyst Max Olson produced a list of the best players in the transfer portal on July 13. When it came to Raiola, the Ducks' addition was ranked just No. 28.
Despite the low ranking, Olson made it clear that Oregon made a good move by bringing Raiola onboard.
"This is an excellent pickup for the Ducks considering the circumstances. How many other top transfer QBs would be open to backing up Dante Moore next season now that Moore is returning?" Olson wrote.
"Raiola was laser focused on joining the Ducks and preferred this opportunity no matter what happens next. Raiola now gets a developmental year learning behind a future first-round pick before starting in 2027."
Only time will tell whether or not the change of scenery from the Cornhuskers to the Ducks will be what Raiola needed to unlock his full potential. Playing for an elite head coach like Lanning will be helpful towards that goal.
Even though the move may not rank among this offseason's best, Raiola will have a chance to rewrite this story with his play on the field starting in 2027.
Hopefully, he is able to live up to the hype that he has had over the last couple of years when his turn to start for Oregon arrives.
