3 storylines for Alabama football entering 2026 SEC media days

This upcoming Wednesday, Alabama football head coach Kalen DeBoer is set to speak as part of the ongoing 2026 SEC media days.

An annual event which essentially serves as the kickoff to football season, SEC media days this year is taking place in Tampa, Florida, and recently began Monday morning. Lasting four days, each of the SEC’s 16 head coaches will speak to the media during this period, as will three players from each program.

The players joining DeBoer in Tampa this week are wide receiver Ryan Coleman-Williams, cornerback Zabien Brown, and safety Bray Hubbard.

Here are three storylines to watch for going into DeBoer’s media availability in particular Wednesday.

Austin Mack or Keelon Russell at quarterback?

Aug. 19, 2025, Tuscaloosa, AL; Quarterbacks Keelon Russell and Austin Mack throw during practice for the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Alabama’s ongoing quarterback competition has been a focal point of the offseason up to this point, and it is likely to be the topic DeBoer is asked about most Wednesday. No, DeBoer will likely not name a starter Wednesday, but the Alabama head coach could very easily provide an update as to where things stand entering fall camp between Austin Mack and Keelon Russell.

Is anyone emerging on Alabama’s offensive line?

April 11, 2026; Tuscaloosa, AL, USA; Alabama offensive linemen Jayvin James and Michael Carroll drop to block at Bryant-Denny Stadium during the Alabama A Day scrimmage.

There is no secret that the offensive lineman turnover for Alabama this offseason has been significant, losing four-of-five starters from a year ago to either the NFL or exhausted eligibility. With only one starter returning in Michael Carroll, it will be interesting to see if DeBoer mentions anyone as having emerged at a starting spot, similar to how offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb talked about left tackle Jackson Lloyd back in the spring.

What is the status of Noah Rogers, EJ Crowell?

The final storyline to watch for Wednesday is if DeBoer provides an update on Alabama players who entered the summer months dealing with injuries, most notably wide receiver Noah Rogers and running back EJ Crowell. With both projected to make an impact this fall, the NC State transfer suffered an injury during the Crimson Tide‘s “A-Day” spring game, while Crowell, a top freshman, missed a majority of spring practice due to injury.
