Monday morning, July 20, it was officially announced that the University of Michigan's Director of Athletics, Warde Manuel, will step down at the end of the 2026 calendar year following an internal investigation.

What ultimately came from an investigation conducted by Jenner & Block at the end of last year has finally resulted in action. Manuel, who served as the Wolverines' athletic director since 2016, was cited for sitting on information that hindered the integrity and success of Michigan's athletic department.

Anything that came with a major red flag seemed to take far too long to be addressed, if it was addressed at all. Manuel appeared to be the man who could sweep even the biggest controversies under the rug. Unfortunately for him, the rug was eventually pulled away, and all the dust bunnies hiding underneath finally came into the open.

This article is not meant to be a slander piece on the Wolverines, their fans, their athletic department, or anyone associated with the university. Michigan fans will continue to believe the program did what it had to do and accepted whatever risks came with reclaiming national championships in two different sports.

Instead, what we're going to do is take an honest look at how this impacts the Big Ten moving forward.

As mentioned, Michigan has piled up national championships over the past few years, winning a football national championship three years ago before capturing a basketball national championship this past season. Regardless of whether some people believe there should be asterisks next to those titles, they still count in the record books.

Then everything started to change.

In both major sports, the Wolverines lost their head coaches, although for completely different reasons.

The football coach became involved in an affair with a member of his staff before reportedly going to her house and threatening her as details of the situation began coming to light.

Meanwhile, the basketball coach accepted a job at the professional level just weeks after winning the national championship. Maybe he simply wanted to advance his career. Maybe he knew what was coming down the road. Only he truly knows that answer.

Regardless, in the span of roughly seven months, Michigan has now lost its football head coach, basketball head coach, and athletic director.

Big Ten rivals may be smiling quietly.

Manuel, no matter how shaky or unprofessional some believed his methods to be, made sure anything that threatened Michigan's pursuit of championships stayed out of the spotlight for as long as possible. He was exceptionally good at it—perhaps even the best the Big Ten has ever seen when it came to keeping stories that could damage an entire athletic department from becoming larger distractions.

Now, with Michigan expected to hire a new athletic director, many around the conference believe the Wolverines will have leadership that prioritizes accountability and transparency. If that proves to be the case, many opposing fan bases believe Michigan will have to win with a different approach than it has in recent years.

Whether that's a fair assessment or not will be determined over time.

One thing is undeniable, however: this is one of the biggest leadership changes in the conference in quite some time. Losing an athletic director is significant. Losing both head coaches in your marquee sports on top of that makes the transition even more difficult.

For the rest of the Big Ten, this could represent an opportunity.

Programs that have spent years trying to chase Michigan now have a chance to capitalize while the Wolverines navigate major changes throughout their athletic department. Stability often wins in college athletics, and right now, Michigan has very little of it.

The Big Ten could be as wide open as it has been in years. With new leadership coming to Ann Arbor and major changes already taking place across the football and basketball programs, every contender in the conference has to believe its window of opportunity just became a little bigger.

Now we'll see how it all plays out.
