The College Football Playoff began in 2014, initially as a four-team playoff. In 2024, the CFP expanded to a 12-team format. Now, there has been incessant talk about expanding the college football playoff even further.
On Monday, Missouri head coach Eliah Drinkwitz spoke at SEC Media Days, and he touched on his idea for the College Football Playoff, per Seth Emerson of The Athletic.
“I was one of the first to come up with a certain idea, and somebody totally screwed it up,” Drinkwitz said Monday. “I am not for giving the committee more opportunities to put teams in the Playoff. As nice as I can be about it, committees are a bad idea.”

His idea would keep conference championship games, with the winner getting an automatic bid. Then conferences would hold play-in games to get into the playoffs. This scenario would give eight teams in the Big Ten and SEC chances to play-in for a bid, while four teams in the ACC and Big 12 would be playing in those games.
“I think each conference should have play-in games that create the opportunity to get into the playoffs,” Drinkwitz said. “That’s how I see it — I think it would create more excitement avenues for your fans to be excited. I think if the top eight teams in your conference had an opportunity to play in the playoffs, that gives you a measuring stick for each fan base that makes sense.”
If the CFP expands, especially to 24 teams, it has been assumed that conference title games could be gone. Still, the SEC has long been a proponent of keeping the games, and Drinkwitz is one of those supporting conference championships.
“Conference championships are important and need to be preserved,” Drinkwitz said. “They’re highly entertaining. They’re highly valuable from a monetary standpoint. And they’re highly valuable from the fan engagement standpoint. So throwing those away so we get a bad matchup between 24 and 18 doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.”
Even if the playoffs expanded and the Drinkwitz scenario was used, Missouri is likely going to be on the outside of the play-in games looking in. Missouri opens its season on September 3 against Arkansas-Pine Bluff, with SEC games against Florida, Texas A&M, Ole Miss, Texas, Georgia, and Oklahoma all on the schedule.
