How high was Notre Dame football ranked USA TODAY’s top programs?

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish continue to be recognized as one of the elite of college football. The Irish earned a spot in the USA TODAY Sports latest rankings of the top-25 programs. Ohio State was listed No. 1 on the list followed by Alabama, and Georgia. Notre Dame was listed at No. 4 securing the Irish a top-5 status once again.

USA TODAY’s list evaluates teams and programs from perceived overall strength, and not necessarily on any singular season. Landing at No. 4 shows the Irish being rewarded for their consistency under head coach Marcus Freeman in the College Football Playoff era. In a landscape dominated by the Big Ten and the SEC, Notre Dame’s appearance as an independent is also quite impressive.

Notre Dame has always been one of the premier brands in all of college football. Now, with the recruiting of Marcus Freeman and his staff, they have built a roster that competes in talent with other perceived blue bloods like Ohio State and Texas. Even the recently released College Football 2027 video game has Notre Dame listed as the No. 4 team overall with an 89 overall ranking.

The Irish will come into next season with very high expectations as they are one of the favorites to win the National Championship. Should they be able to accomplish that goal, it is possible they can find themselves in the top-3 of the very same rankings a year from now.
