Ole Miss football coach Lane Kiffin is at the center of college football coaching search rumors involving Florida and LSU.
Meanwhile, the Rebels (10-1, 6-1 SEC) are the No. 6 team in the country and in great position to make the College Football Playoff for the first time.
Ole Miss is in the middle of an open week before playing at rival Mississippi State in the Egg Bowl on Nov. 28 (11 a.m., ABC).
So how did we get here? Why would Kiffin consider leaving while leading what could be the best season in Ole Miss history? And why hasn’t the situation been resolved?
Here’s what we know so far.
Lane Kiffin linked to Florida, LSU coaching jobs
The rumors started on Oct. 19 when Florida fired coach Billy Napier, and they intensified when LSU fired coach Brian Kelly on Oct. 26.
Two of the best coaching jobs in the SEC were open, and Lane Kiffin was the coach at the top of both schools’ lists.
Why Kiffin? In six seasons Kiffin has turned Ole Miss into a contender in the SEC, the best college football conference in the country. The Rebels have won 10 games for the third consecutive season, the first time that has happened in Ole Miss history.
Why do Florida, LSU want to hire Lane Kiffin?
Lane Kiffin, 50, has a 54-19 record at Ole Miss, and he’s taken the Rebels to a bowl game in every season. Ole Miss came close to making the College Football Playoff last season.
Kiffin has been able to rebuild the Rebels program by becoming the transfer portal king. Ole Miss has pulled in a top-four class in each year since 2022, according to 247Sports rankings.
Kiffin is also seen as a fun coach. Ole Miss players celebrate big plays by dunking a basketball on a portable goal on the sideline.
