Georgia football's Kirby Smart on his twins off to college and another drawing college offers

TAMPA, Fla. —  Kirby Smart and his Georgia football assistant coaches identify talent and make decisions on which rising prospects are worthy of getting a scholarship offer.

Smart is now seeing that on the other side of that with his youngest child, rising ninth-grade quarterback Andrew Smart, picking up offers in recent months from Georgia Tech and Colorado State.

It’s another sign that a coach who attended his first SEC Media Days as Georgia coach in 2016 at the age of 40 is seeing his three kids grow up fast as he begins his 11^th season.

Next month, twins Weston and Julia will be college freshmen.

Weston will attend the University of North Carolina. Julia will be close to home at UGA attending the same school Kirby and his wife Mary Beth graduated from.

“The two kids going to college is the big, big worry for me,” Smart said Tuesday. “I don’t know how my wife is going to respond. I don’t know I’m going to respond.”

He’s heard from former Georgia assistant coach Will Muschamp, wide receivers coach James Coley and offensive coordinator Mike Bobo about kids leaving the house for college.

“That’ll be new for me,” Smart said. “You think it’s not going to be hard and then you’re dropping them off and it feels like you’re doing it forever.”

Smart said Mary Beth is “very concerned about emptying that nest a little bit with two leaving. I’m excited to have one in Athens and then one in Chapel Hill.”

Smart didn’t have much to say about Andrew’s college offers which have drawn headlines.

“He’s got a long way to go,” Smart said.

Andrew, who has caught passes on the field pregame at Georgia games for years, will be a freshman at Athens Academy.

“I just know as someone who works really hard,” linebacker Justin Williams said last week. “Being Coach Smart’s son, he works very hard. He’s very talented. He’s working the best that he can. You know, he’s young, get’s got a lot of time before he gets to college, but he’s an up-and-coming riser.”
