Vanderbilt football fans know that they had a special opportunity to watch quarterback Diego Pavia blossom throughout his college football career, but that era has come to an end.

Commodores head coach Clark Lea has his team prepared for life without the Heisman Trophy runner-up from a year ago, and doesn't believe Pavia needs to be directly replaced.

"I don't actually believe that that player needs to perform the way that Diego performed," Lea said during SEC Media Days.

Lea appears to be prioritizing building out his roster as a whole rather than relying solely on whomever wins the quarterback battle this summer.

"We have to focus on ways to strengthen as a team to take pressure off that position," said Lea. "I don't know how it's going to look. The story is yet to be written. I do know that I'm excited for it, and we'll be excited to kind of see it unfold through training camp."

The Commodores will give Blaze Berlowitz, Whit Muschamp, Jared Curtis and Jack Elliott a chance to suit up under center for the team's first game against Austin Peay on September 5. Curtis may have a leg up, as the team convinced him to switch his commitment from Georgia to Vanderbilt last December.
