Jon Sumrall: Florida Isn't Ready For Georgia Just Yet

The Florida Gators haven't beaten the Georgia Bulldogs since 2020, a record that certainly has the eye of first-year head coach Jon Sumrall. 

Sumrall has noted that Florida State and Georgia are the Gators' two biggest rivals. While UF should be Florida State this fall, the Gators are in jeopardy of losing their ninth meeting against the Dawgs in their last 10 meetings.

During the SEC Media Days on Wednesday in Tampa Bay, On3's Crain & Cone talked to Sumrall about the upcoming Florida-Georgia game. Sumrall admitted that Florida is behind the Dawgs in the SEC currently.

“Georgia is a great program," Sumrall said. "We've got a lot of work to do to get where we need to be in that rivalry game.”

It might take a couple of seasons before Florida is ready to compete with Georgia under Sumrall. No doubt, Sumrall would like boosters to donate more money for the 2027 season so Florida has a better chance to compete with the Bulldogs and other top teams in the SEC.

Florida running back Jadan Baugh is set to return to his hometown to play Georgia in Atlanta on Halloween. He told reporters that he's more focused on competing against the Bulldogs than he his about a homecoming in Atlanta.

"A rivalry game in general is exciting just because there's so much around it," Baugh said, via USA Today. "And we played this game in Jacksonville a couple times. It was always exciting because you see the red and you see the blue and it gets loud at one time and then it got loud another time.

"But being able to go back home and play in front of my family and all my friends, it's very exciting for me. And I'm not too much focused on that. I'm more focused on the game, though."

Amid a 4-8 season last year, the Gators only lost to the Dawgs by four points (24-20). With better coaching under Sumrall, there is a chance Florida can pull off the upset this season.

But that's what it would be: an upset. 

Sumrall envisions getting the Gators to a place where beating Georgia wouldn't be an upset. There's a lot of work that needs to be done on the field and off first.
