The LSU football program made a big splash ahead of the 2026 season, when the school was able to lure Lane Kiffin away from Ole Miss. Kiffin is now set to to return to Ole Miss in an LSU road game this upcoming season. Ahead of the season, former Alabama coach Nick Saban is sending a warning to Kiffin.

“Lane Kiffin is gonna break my boo record this season at Ole Miss,” Saban said on the Pat McAfee show on ESPN. “They won’t even remember when I went back to LSU with Alabama after that one.”

While Saban’s statements were likely made in jest, there is some truth to them. Kiffin was given a very cold reception from Ole Miss fans when it was announced he was leaving the Rebels.

That is because Kiffin famously left Ole Miss before the 2025 season’s College Football Playoff. Ole Miss was essentially a lock to get in the CFP field at that point. While Kiffin stated he wanted to stay there to coach the Rebels in the CFP, Ole Miss officials didn’t agree with that plan.

Kiffin is now at LSU where he hopes to lead the Tigers to a national championship. Saban won a national title at LSU, and Tigers fans expect the football team to compete for championships close to every year.

Saban and Kiffin have a long history. Kiffin worked under Saban as an assistant coach at Alabama. He also coached against Saban when he was leading Ole Miss, and Saban worked for the Crimson Tide.

During the 2026 college football season, LSU plays at Ole Miss on September 19. It is safe to say a lot of people will be tuning in for that game, to see what happens. Saban added on McAfee’s show that ESPN College GameDay will likely be there.

LSU meanwhile kicks off their season against Clemson on September 5.
