On Wednesday morning, the Maxwell Football Club announced that Coach Mike Elko has been named a semifinalist for the George Munger College Coach of the Year Award.

It has been a historic season for the 2025 Texas A&M football team, and they now have the opportunity to accomplish things that have not been achieved in decades. The primary reason is second-year Coach Elko.

Under his leadership, A&M is 10-0 with a floor of 11-1 for the regular season, with an SEC title game and a CFP berth still ahead. On the way to a No. 3 national ranking, they are also trending toward a top-five 2026 signing class and the No. 1 2027 class. Coach Elko has excelled with his staff, managing the dual responsibilities of head coach and general manager, while also being more hands-on with the defense, which has been impressive.

They are ranked at the top nationally in third-down defense and sacks, while also being among the best offensively in scoring and total offense. Now, he might not win in the long run, but if you had told anyone at the beginning of the season that A&M would be on the short list as a national title contender, they would have called it a pipe dream.

Below is how the Maxwell Football Club selects the award winner, along with the announcement from the Texas A&M football official X account.

The George Munger Award honors coaches who embody the strategic brilliance, leadership, and dedication that Munger exemplified. By recognizing the top coach each year, the award upholds Munger’s legacy, celebrating those who demonstrate exceptional ability in guiding their teams and achieving remarkable success on the field. This esteemed accolade ensures that Munger’s impact on the sport continues to be acknowledged and celebrated. Finalists will be announced on Dec. 8, and the winner of the 2025 George Munger Award will be announced on Dec. 30, 2025.

Texas A&M will return to Kyle Field this weekend for Senior Day to face Samford, just one week after its historic comeback victory over the Gamecocks. Kickoff against the Bulldogs is scheduled for 11 a.m. CT and will be broadcast live on SEC Network+.
