Florida HC Jon Sumrall Addresses Fan's Expectations

New Florida Gators head coach Jon Sumrall is doing more than developing his current roster for the upcoming season.
He's trying to sell the program to his fans and Florida's boosters.
In the current demands of college football, UF needs money and resources to recruit elite talent to compete in the SEC and for a spot in the College Football Playoff. After a 4-8 season in 2025, the Gators find themselves behind in spending.
Sumrall thinks Florida is about $15 million away from spending with the top teams in the conference.
During the SEC Media Days this week in Tampa, Florida, Sumrall addressed Gators fans, telling them why he took the job in Gainesville and how he hopes to meet their expectations in the future.
"To Gator Nation, part of why I chose Florida, as a head coach, you become in that role because they have to choose you, but you have to choose them back,'' Sumrall said, via the Gators' website. "Part of why I chose Florida was because of the passion of our fan base.
"Football matters at the University of Florida. Our fan base cares deeply. We have 18 straight sell-outs through maybe not ideal on-the-field results. We have a long way to go to catch the record at Florida. So, we have to keep moving forward to keep that going."
Per wcjb.com, Florida's longest streak came between 1989 and 2011, when the program sold out 138 consecutive games. Of course, that was when UF was in its prime, winning three national championships between head coach Steve Spurrier and Urban Meyer.
Sumrall gave a nod to both of those coaches in his news conference, saying both had been helpful during his early time on campus.
"I've had the privilege of spending a lot of time since getting to Gainesville with Coach Spurrier, and my wife with his wife, Jerri. They've been unbelievable to us,'' Sumrall said.
"For me as a head coach to walk the same walk he's walked, to have him as a resource has been great. Urban Meyer has been awesome. I've spent a ton of time with him since taking the job, and I'm very grateful he's made himself available as a resource to me."
Sumrall is trying to build Florida back to what it was under Spurrier and Meyer. He'll need help to do so, and that will come at the expense of the fan base.
