With SEC media days complete, the Oklahoma Sooners' attention now turns to fall camp and preparing for the 2026 season. The Sooners were among the most talked-about programs during SEC media days.
Oklahoma is coming off a 10-3 season and a return to the College Football Playoff despite navigating one of the nation's toughest schedules. The challenge won't get any easier in 2026, as Oklahoma will travel to face the Michigan Wolverines, Georgia Bulldogs and Texas Longhorns (neutral site in Dallas) while hosting the Ole Miss Rebels and Texas A&M Aggies.
If Oklahoma hopes to improve on last year's playoff season, college football analyst David Pollack believes the offense, led by quarterback John Mateer, must take the next step.
"He's got the goods," Pollack said on 'See Ball Get Ball with David Pollack.' "He's got the IT factor. He's got as much horsepower as anybody in college football. That thing comes out with some zip on it… He's got to get better with deep ball placement. They've got to get better taking shots. They've got to improve just offensively from an efficiency standpoint."
Pollack's evaluation reflects where Oklahoma stands entering the 2026 season. The Sooners already possess an elite defense and one of the nation's most talented quarterbacks in Mateer. The next step is becoming more efficient offensively, particularly in the vertical passing game. If Mateer and the offense can make those improvements, Oklahoma will have the complete roster needed to compete for both an SEC championship and a national title.
