Texas A&M (10-0, 7-0 SEC) remains the No. 3-ranked team in the latest College Football Rankings, as the Aggies have not moved up or down, even after defeating South Carolina 31-30 in what is not considered the most incredible comeback in both program and SEC history. However, No. 2 Indiana and No. 1 Ohio State are also undefeated, so it’s not surprising the Aggies have stayed at No. 3.

The narrative regarding the Aggies’ SEC opponents, who are all expected to miss the CFP, is somewhat ridiculous, knowing that three consecutive road games against Arkansas, LSU, and Missouri is a tough draw for any team in the country. Combined with the road win over Notre Dame in Week 3, Texas A&M should be considered the most complete team in the country.

Still, the Aggies need to finish 12-0, which means defeating Samford on Saturday, followed by the Texas Longhorns on Black Friday, to earn a spot in the SEC Championship Game and secure a top 3 seed in the CFP. On Monday, Mike Elko spoke during the weekly SEC Teleconference to preview the Bulldogs and discuss his team’s standing in recent rankings.

Ahead of Texas A&M vs. Samford, here is everything Mike Elko said during Wednesday’s SEC Teleconference.

Mike Elko on his close relationship with junior linebacker Daymion Sanford

“We loved him. We thought he was a tremendous talent at the time.”

“We thought he was an elite talent… We had him out to Duke a couple of times until Texas A&M ultimately swooped in.”

Mike Elko further reflects on Saturday’s historic comeback vs. South Carolina

“The knowledge that we can battle ourselves out of a tough situation. The resolve that we showed going into halftime and not panicking.”

“It kind of prepares us for the back-and-forth that comes with inevitably playing meaningful games late in the season.”

Texas A&M’s Week 3 win over Notre Dame still holds a lasting impact

“Winning that game at the end at Notre Dame gave us such a big confidence boost that we were capable of accomplishing things on the road.”

Mike Elko on the SEC’s current standing in the CFP rankings

“We have to figure out how to reward SEC teams for playing in the SEC because if we’re not going to be rewarded for Strength of Schedule metrics or Strength of Record, then it’s going to be challenging with us going to nine games.”

“We have to find a way to give our league and our conference more credit for the wins that we get.”

Mike Elko on safety Bryce Anderson, who is expected to redshirt after missing all but four games this season

“At this point, he’s still not completely back. He’s getting close. At this point, I don’t think it would be in Bryce’s best interest to play in one of these two.”
