ESPN places Texas A&M's 2027 class in Tier 1 with 'Traditional powers'

Texas A&M's 2027 recruiting class is unanimously ranked No. 1 in 247Sports, Rivals, and ESPN's latest rankings, as third-year coach Mike Elko has further proven that he is one of the top recruiters in the country, landing a nation-high six five-star prospects, while offensive tackle Mark Matthews was recently elevated as Rivals' No. 2-ranked prospect in its Rivals300 rankings.

Last week, ESPN's Eli Lederman released his recruiting tiers for the 2027 cycle, and while the Aggies remain the No. 1-ranked class in the site's latest rankings, several programs including Oregon, Texas, Ohio State, and Notre Dame could easily be sitting in the No. 1 spot if it were't for A&M's haul during the spring and summer, and join Texas A&M in Tier 1.

While Mark Matthews leads the class as the top-ranked commit, Lederman notes that, if Texas A&M secures the No. 1-ranking, the Aggies will be the first team to sign more than five five-star commits since Alabama and former coach Nick Saban in 2014 and 2023, outside of the Aggies' historic 2022 recruiting class, which ended up being a disaster with nearly every former prospect transferring and or not living up to their potential.

Still, agreeing with Lederman, Mike Elko has proven his ability to develop recruiting/transfer portal talent after a record 10 players were selected in the 2026 NFL Draft.

"After completing its five-star spree with offensive tackles Kennedy Brown (No. 5 overall) and Mark Matthews (No. 12) and wide receiver Eric McFarland III (No. 17), Texas A&M is threatening to make history later this year as the first program to sign six five-stars in a single cycle in the ESPN recruiting rankings era. That five-star haul, which leads the nation's top-ranked class, is a testament to the Aggies' transformation under third-year coach Mike Elko.

Of course, such elite collections of talent are only as good as the production they ultimately provide.

Since 2006, there have been three cycles in which a program signed five five-star prospects, per ESPN Research: Alabama in 2014 and 2023 and Texas A&M in 2022. Each member of the Crimson Tide's 2014 five-star class contributed to at least one national title; two became first-team All-Americans. On the flip side, while Texas A&M's 2022 class featured future standouts such as Walter Nolen III, LT Overton and Evan Stewart, all but edge rusher Shemar Stewart wound up playing their best football somewhere else. With Elko at the helm this time around, there's confidence that the Aggies are equipped to capitalize on a historic 2027 class."

Nick Saban's ability to hire the right coaching staff, which included current Texas A&M OC Holmon Wiggins, directly led to the development of top recruiting talent and resulted in six national titles with the Crimson Tide, in an era when the transfer portal was seldom used. Time will tell if Mike Elko can even come close to Saban's success, but so far, so good.
