Bielema’s emphasis on college experience will be valuable for Illini O-line

It is a tale of two seasons for Illinois.

Last season, the program returned all five starters on the offensive line as well as its starting quarterback.

This season is a completely different story. Illinois will see a plethora of turnover in the offensive trenches as well as the quarterback position, but head coach Bret Bielema is not discouraged by this.

“We don’t have snaps at Illinois, but reps in college football are very, very important,” Bielema said Tuesday at Big Ten Media Days.

Bielema specifically mentioned Christian Martin, Maika Matelau, and Jake Renfro as impactful transfers who all have their fair share of experience.

Martin started all 12 games at Colorado State last year; Matelau saw a lot of time at the junior college level; and Renfro started 12 games at Wisconsin and 19 at Cincinnati. Regardless of the level of school they all played at, experience is experience, and it is something Illinois will have to rely on heavily this fall.

This experience is incredibly valuable, even more so when they are tasked with protecting a transfer quarterback who will likely still be getting a feel for the system and his receivers early on in the season.

Much like the offensive line transfers, Houser makes up for his lack of experience with the Illini in his starts at East Carolina and Michigan State.

Bielema also talked about how he is “counting on those reps to carry into Illinois as well.”

Roster turnover, especially to the extent Illinois has seen, can create some doubt about the team’s success. Fortunately for the program, these veterans of the game have all the tools necessary to uphold Illinois’ recent winning standard.
