Head coach Bret Bielema wasn't the only Illinois guy to step in front of the microphone on Tuesday during Big Ten Media Days, as he was joined by a great panel of players as well. Bielema brought along with him defensive backs Matthew Bailey and Juice Clark as well as new transfer quarterback Katin Houser.
Houser has some big shoes to fill after Luke Altmyer helped Illinois win nine or more games in back-to-back seasons for the first time in program history. While winning is important to Houser, as it is to any athlete, he is already showing the type of character he brings to Illinois.
Bielema could have gone with one of his young guys and developed them through playing time at the quarterback position, but instead he opted to find experience in the transfer portal. That is where Houser comes in. As a senior transfer having played two years at Michigan State and two years at ECU, Houser knows he can offer more than just his playing ability to the team. Houser is taking the time to really mentor the young guys behind him.
"I just want to be a light for them. I want them to feel comfortable asking me questions," Houser said. "I want them to have success."
It's a really young #Illini QB room after Katin Houser.
I asked him about working with those first and second year players, and helping them grow.

Katin Houser is the best example of what a true leader is at Illinois
Houser has been around the college football block, and even the Big Ten block before. He knows how this game works; he has seen his fair share of snaps. He also knows what it is like to be the young guy in a room experiencing everything for the first time, and he wants those guys to feel comfortable with their transition.
Coming in as a transfer, Houser is going through his own type of transition, but instead of focusing on himself, he is taking the time to help the younger guys below him. He remembers what it feels like to be the young guys and just wants to be the helping hand that they need both on and off the field.
Not only does Houser want the young guys to ask him questions on football and stuff on the field, but he wants a relationship with them off the field. Houser knows that he won't be at Illinois forever; hell, he won't even be at Illinois next season, and these young guys will be the future of the program.
This is what a true leader is, and seeing Houser so bought into the program at Illinois that he is making sure the young guys around them can be as successful as possible in the future is everything Bielema could have wanted in a transfer quarterback.
It also doesn't hurt that Houser brings a lot of talent to the program as well, with 3,300 passing yards and 19 touchdowns last season, as well as nearly 200 rushing yards and nine rushing touchdowns. It is a shame the Illini will only have him for one season, but it is looking like a good one right now.
