Last week, Texas A&M coach Mike Elko, linebacker Daymion Sanford, quarterback Marcel Reed, and safety Marcus Ratcliffe spoke to the local and national media during SEC Media Days, all providing those of us who cover the program plenty of quotes and important updates regarding player progress and position battles ahead of fall camp, starting next month.
Mike Elko made national headlines after bluntly stating that, in order to keep his roster motivated, "I show them our trophy case, and it's empty. They're all very aware of that. … It's not lost on us that we haven't won the hardware that we're searching for." A harsh truth, this quote embodies Elko's determination to keep his roster mentally ready for the challenge the 2026 roster presents, especially if the Aggies match their early 2025 success after reaching 11-0 last season.
All three players made their first appearance at SEC Media Days, while Marcel Reed, who is entering his second full starting season after throwing for a career-high 3,169 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions, discussed where he needs to improve, including not "making a bad play worse" after throwing 8 of his 12 interceptions against top-32-ranked defenses last season.
Daymion Sanford, who is also coming off a career year, injured his fibula, which required surgery, but has graduated from his walking boot and is already back running, which is great news and could result in a faster return to the field. Marcus Ratcliffe, who is equally impressive off the field as he is on the field, is expected to make another jump as one of the defensive leaders.
Senior Bowl Executive Director Drew Fabianich praised Elko and all three players after their SEC Media Days appearance in a post on X, pointing out Daymion Sanford's versatility, physicality and size, Marcel Reed's continued growth as a pocket passer, Marcus Ratcliffe's NFL-level speed and athleticism, and Mike Elko's steadfast support of the Senior Bowl, which he continually discusses during the offseason.
A few of my thoughts on @AggieFootball from @SEC Media Days:@Daymionsanford is a versatile linebacker who’s very physical for his size. He’s solid in space and comfortable in coverage.@RatcliffeMarcus is big and fast. Sometimes it’s really that simple. Really excited to see… pic.twitter.com/yyDmafZFw5
