Clemson Lost Elite Recruit to Georgia for One Key Reason

A couple of weeks ago, it appeared that the Clemson Tigers were the clear frontrunners to land four-star 2027 safety Seth Williams.

In fact, Williams had already committed to Clemson back in March, but decommitted a couple of weeks later. Even after that, he maintained that the Tigers were at the top of his list.

Williams was supposed to reveal his commitment in early July, but postponed his date to later on in the month. Clemson and Georgia were his top two teams, and the general feeling was that he was still going to pick Dabo Swinney's squad.

However, Williams ultimately spurned Clemson on July 31, deciding to take his talents to Georgia in a tough blow to the Tigers.

So, why exactly did Williams decide to join the Bulldogs instead of Clemson?

Well, Jason Priester of The Clemson Insider — who spoke with Williams throughout the process — feels he knows the answer: playing time.

"It wasn’t until two weeks ago that Georgia finally picked up its first commitment from a defensive back, when four-star safety Adryan Cole committed on July 18," Priester wrote. "The day before, four-star safety Ta’Shawn Poole spurned the Dawgs in favor of Florida State. He is one of a handful of safeties they missed on during this current cycle. And Georgia still hasn’t landed a commitment from a cornerback."

Meanwhile, Clemson had already landed a pair of four-star safeties in Jarrell Chandler and Harrison Luke, so perhaps Williams felt Georgia offered an easier path to the field.

It should also be noted that Williams is a Georgia native, which also may have played a role in his decision.

Williams is the 37th-ranked safety in the class of 2027. He is playing his high-school football at Lakeside, where he registered 75 tackles, an interception and a forced fumble last season. He even played some offense, where he logged 10 catches for 222 yards and three touchdowns.

Even after losing out on Williams, Clemson has still put together quite an impressive recruiting class for next year. It includes a five-star talent in wide receiver Jamarin Williams plus 10 four-stars. The Tigers' 2027 class ranks 13th in the nation.
