Alabama Loses No 1 JUCO Recruit to ACC Program

The Alabama Crimson Tide are off to a slow start in recruiting for the 2027 class.
It isn't abnormal for the Crimson Tide to have a slow start in recruiting cycles during the spring and summer, but the program is losing on some pretty big battles like the one they lost on Sunday.
Per 247 Sports, Alabama is currently ranked No. 41 for the 2027 class, with two five-star athletes and two four-star athletes committed.
Per Hayes Fawcett of Rivals, cornerback Alius Mayo committed to Cal. He chose the Golden Bears over Alabama and LSU, choosing to play for new head coach Tosh Lupoi, who was previously the defensive coordinator at Oregon.
Mayo is considered the No. 1 JUCO recruit for 2027.
"BREAKING: Elite JUCO CB Alius Mayo has Committed to Cal, he tells me for Rivals," Fawcett posted on X. "The 6’4 190 CB chose the Golden Bears over Alabama and LSU. He’s ranked as Rivals’ No. 1 JUCO Recruit in the 2027 class."
A six-foot-four cornerback would have been a nice get for Alabama's defense.
Fans on social media reacted to Mayo choosing Cal.
"Cal's secondary is gonna be absurdly long with mayo and that 6'5 freshman they signed last cycle," wrote a fan.
"Translation: Cal pay him more than Alabama and LSU did," wrote another. "Lol let’s quit using the word “CHOSE” and start using the word “PAY”, because let’s be honest for a second, and admit this wouldn’t happen 7-8 years ago."

"Yeah people are gonna be shocked Cal has money and Lupoi was the man for this job. They are gonna be very talented," posted another.
"Cal just upgraded its defense from “golden” to “golden ticket.” Congrats to Alius Mayo, the bear’s new wall of fur!" wrote a fan.
