The Clemson Tigers and head coach Dabo Swinney have kicked off their 2028 with a massive commitment before the end of the month.

Swinney's attention this summer has primarily been on the 2027 recruiting class. The program managed to land a slew of four-stars, including wide receiver Jamarin Simmons, defensive lineman Seth Tillman, and EDGE Desmond Malpress. But this week, Swinney and the Tigers' coaching staff have dipped into the 2028 recruiting class to land a potential cornerstone piece for the future.

On Thursday evening, 2028 four-star quarterback Trace Hawkins announced his commitment to Clemson, over the likes of the Vanderbilt Commodores and the LSU Tigers.

Hawkins' Outlook With Clemson

Hawkins, an earlier riser in the 2028 recruiting cycle, was a key target for Swinney and the Tigers' coaching staff. As of this month, the talented quarterback is the No. 21 quarterback in the 2028 class, as well as a top-40 prospect in the state of Georgia, per 247Sports' Composite.

During his sophomore season at Calhoun High School, Hawkins quickly became a hot prospect in the upcoming recruiting class. He would finish his 2025 campaign with 2,442 passing yards, 24 touchdowns, and three interceptions. In addition to his strong showing through the air, Hawkins also recorded 153 rushing yards and three touchdowns.

Standing at 6-foot, 180 lbs., it's clear that Hawkins lacks the typical stature of a college quarterback. However, he makes up for his lack of physical tools with his ability to remain accurate at all three levels of the field while also having the legs to create out of structure. As a freshman, Hawkins led his high school to its fifth GHSA AAA state championship, proving he is capable of being a leader at the college level.

Hawkins is now the first commitment in Swinney's 2028 recruiting class. He is set to join 2027 commit and fellow four-star quarterback Kharim Hughley as the quarterbacks of the future for the Tigers.

Hughley, who has been committed to the program since June of 2025, is the No. 13 quarterback and prospect in the state of Georgia for the 2027 recruiting class.
