5 Oklahoma Sooners who will be X-Factors in 2026

The Oklahoma Sooners have one of the best rosters in college football, with a group among ESPN's top 20 in returning production for 2026. There's talent on both sides of the ball that gives OU an opportunity to make a significant run toward a national championship despite a schedule that ranks as one of the toughest in college football.

That's because there are a number of big-time players leading the way that will play key roles in the Sooners' season. ESPN believes that wide receiver Parker Livingstone will be the X-Factor for Oklahoma this season. He'll be incredibly impactful this season but won't be the only X-factor for the Sooners to have as much success in 2026 as they hope to have.

Here's a look at five more players that will be X-factors for the Sooners in 2026.

1. Offensive Line

Okay, so this is cheating a bit, but as a unit, there's no bigger determining factor to Oklahoma's offensive success than the play of Bill Bedenbaugh's group up front. They were good as a pass-protecting unit in 2025 but need to take a step in the run game. Now in their second year with the program, Michael Fasusi, Ryan Fodje, and Jake Maikkula have made significant physical strides, gaining an average of 7.33 pounds per player. Eddy Pierre-Louis is up five pounds from last year.

The Sooners have matured this offseason physically and learned a lot from their experience in SEC play last year and should take a significant step.

2. Isaiah Sategna, WR

Oklahoma's leading receiver and a second-team All-SEC performer last season will be the biggest beneficiary from a healthy John Mateer in 2026. Sategna was a big-play threat every time he touched the football and will have a chance to lead the Sooners in receiving once again.

With better weapons on the outside after the additions of Livingstone, Trell Harris, and a tight end group, and with an improved ground game, Sategna may get even more room to operate this season. While he certainly be a focus for opposing defensive coordinators, he's what you call a scheme buster with his world-class speed.

3. Jayden Jackson, DT

A lot of the focus and praise for the Oklahoma Sooners' defensive line focuses on David Stone and Taylor Wein. And for good reason, they're among the best at their position in college football. But don't forget the often overlooked Jayden Jackson. Jackson is one of the best nose tackles (1 or 0 techniques) in college football. His blend of speed, power, and quickness makes him a problem for interior offensive linemen.

Jackson's atmosphere has strong gravity, drawing double-teams because of his ability to push back centers and guards, and that creates opportunities for defensive linemen on stunts and linebackers and safeties on the blitz.

The stats may not be eye-popping, but his value goes beyond the numbers. Just ask opposing offensive coordinators and NFL Draft evaluators.

4. John Mateer, QB

John Mateer is as important as it comes for Oklahoma's offense. At the same time, he learned last season that Oklahoma can win football games even when he's limited or not at his best. Yes, Mateer had 11 interceptions on the season, but six of those came in two games: the Texas and LSU games. When he's not trying to do too much and force things into coverage, he's dangerous as a passer.

After the thumb injury, he had eight interceptions in eight games, but four games without a pick. With the defense that the Sooners have, he doesn't have to force things down the field for Oklahoma to win. Mateer can win a lot of football games for the Sooners by taking care of the football.

5. Courtland Guillory, CB

Courtland Guillory was one of the best true freshmen in college football last year and made a significant impact for the Sooners' defense. Now in year two, look for Guillory to level up his game even further. Oklahoma has a fantastic secondary with Eli Bowen, Peyton Bowen, and the emerging Michael Boganowski, but Guillory could end up as the best of the bunch by the time his career at Oklahoma is over.
