Florida Now Has Expectations for Immediate Success Under Jon Sumrall

New Florida Gators head coach Jon Sumrall could have taken the easy way out this season, suggesting that the team needed to make incremental progress in his first year in Gainesville after inserting a program that went 4-8 last season.
Instead, Sumrall has been talking up his team, noting that it would feel like a complete failure if Florida didn't at least make a bowl game. To be sure, Sumrall has noted that his team doesn't have the resources top programs in the SEC have, as the Gators are about $15 million away from those teams.
The energy Sumrall has brought to Florida has some national analysts thinking it could be a dark horse for the College Football Playoff. Former Gators head coach Steve Spurrier thinks the team could win 10 games.
In his SEC coaching ranking, Brad Crawford of CBS Sports ranked Sumrall as the No. 10 coach in the conference, and thinks there is enough at Florida for the team to have immediate success this year, putting a little pressure on Sumrall in his first year as a Power 4 head coach.
"No SEC first-year coach has received more offseason love than Sumrall, who inherits a talented group and made several home-run hires to aid in Florida's coaching transition," Crawford wrote. "Sumrall brings toughness, accountability and a proven ability to maximize a roster — traits the Gators desperately need after years of inconsistency.
"Florida attacked the offseason with urgency, giving Sumrall enough around him to make immediate progress rather than endure another lengthy reset. The SEC schedule will provide little margin for error, but there is legitimate talent in Gainesville and renewed belief inside the program. Sumrall's Tulane teams played with an edge. If that identity translates quickly, the Gators could become one of the league's biggest risers in 2026."
It's a lot for Sumrall to live up to given the issues Florida has on its roster.
It's unclear if the winner of the quarterback battle between Aaron Philo or Tramell Jones Jr. will be enough to get the Gators to the CFP, especially behind an offensive line that will have three new starters.
