The news about Notre Dame and USC renewing the Jeweled Shillelagh rivalry is great for college football. Shortly after, the news about Indiana canceling its upcoming series against Notre Dame was not.
This shouldn’t come as a big shock to anyone that follows either program. In fact, I pretty much predicted this in a post from last week after looking over the series contract agreement. Indiana wants nothing to do with playing any team with a pulse outside of its conference schedule — and the Irish are much more than a team with a pulse.
Look, the future of college football is always uncertain, but it’s decisions like this that really signal the end of what used to be great about the sport. Surprisingly — I don’t blame Indiana as they have seen what works for them already, but that doesn’t mean I won’t always look down on cowardly behavior.
Cowardly behavior. Google it.
