It was one of the most brutal championship endings in Colorado high school football history.

Nearly a year ago, The Classical Academy won the Class 2A state football championship on a controversial late call that went the Titans’ way in a 42-36 title win over Wellington.

Now, the rematch is here.

No. 3 TCA travels north to face No. 2 Wellington in the 2A semifinals (Nov. 22, 1 p.m.).

It’s a meeting of the final 2A unbeatens and prohibitive title favorites, a revenge game the Eagles have dreamed of for nearly a year now.

They haven’t dwelled on that sour ending to an otherwise magical postseason ride, turning the heartbreaking defeat into fuel and a “leave no doubt” mantra for the 2025 team.

But nobody around the Wellington football program has forgotten the play, either.

See the no-fumble call below:

The Eagles had valiantly come back from multiple 14-point deficits to take its first lead (36-35) on a touchdown and 2-point conversion in the championship game’s waning minutes.

The Titans drove down the field and entered scoring range, well within the red zone. With around 40 seconds left, Jackson Schipfer appeared to fumble near the goal line and into Wellington hands.

But officials ruled the runner down, a somewhat inexplicable decision, especially considering that one official stood mere feet away while looking straight at the sequence.

Despite replays shown on the field’s video board and captured by TV cameras near the end zone that seemed to show a clear fumble, no review is possible in Colorado high school football.

So the call stood. TCA scored a touchdown moments later, and the rest was history.

The Eagles can’t change that history, but they’ll get a chance to make some of their own.

With a win, the fourth-year program could knock off the defending state champs, make a second consecutive 2A title game and become the first Poudre School District state football champions since 1969.
