Hurricanes’ Hayden Lowe, Jontavius Wyman no longer on team; Luka Gilbert out for year

Three Miami players, including two who may have been significant contributors this season, will not see the field.

Hurricanes sophomore tight end Luka Gilbert will miss the season due to an injury. Additionally, redshirt freshman defensive lineman Hayden Lowe and freshman cornerback Jontavius Wyman are no longer with the team.

UM coach Mario Cristobal confirmed the roster news on The Joe Rose Show on WQAM on Tuesday morning before the first practice of fall camp. Cristobal did not provide a reason why Lowe and Wyman were no longer with the team.

Lowe was potentially the most promising of those three players. The California native was listed as a four-star prospect in 247Sports’ composite ranking. He was listed as the No. 8 edge rusher and No. 75 player in the 2025 class.

Lowe arrived on campus before spring football began in 2025, and he was one of the most promising players in the class. He received praise from the coaching staff and teammates before suffering a season-ending injury that kept him off the field last year.

“We’re really high on him,” defensive line coach Jason Taylor said in 2025. “We recruited him and thought very highly of him. I think he (was) one of the top edge players in the country. He’s come here and has not disappointed.”

Cristobal said during the spring that Lowe was “taking care of some personal matters.”

Gilbert is a promising tight end. A four-star prospect in the 2025 class, Gilbert was listed as the No. 22 tight end and No. 353 player in the class. He had 79 total snaps and had two catches for 37 yards in 2025. Gilbert was a potential contributor this year and likely would have backed up Elija Lofton.

Wyman, a freshman cornerback, is a Georgia native. He was a four-star prospect, listed as the No. 41 cornerback and No. 376 player in the class.

Wyman announced his plans to sit out the 2026 season on Saturday.

“After a lot of thought, prayer and conversations with the people closest to me, I’ve decided to sit out from football this year,” Wyman wrote.
